Most kitchens have a sink, a refrigerator, and a stove installed in a specific pattern that allows for storage, prep, cooking and cleaning. In a kosher kitchen, you'll need two overlapping triangles for meat and dairy. That means double sinks and double stoves, and many prefer double dishwashers and refrigerators as well. This means that kosher kitchens need more pre-planning than the average kitchen and since there won’t just be double appliances, but also silverware, dishes, bowls, pots, pans and glassware, storage is going to be one of your primary concerns. In some cases, not only are meat and dairy supposed to be stored separately but so are unleavened breads for Passover.
There is a plethora of advice and a paucity of assistance when it comes to designing your dream kitchen. Advice changes, as fashions change, with the seasons. One minute everything is stainless steel, the next it is retro and pastels. The most important thing to remember about kitchen design is to start with the basics. Forget fashion for a moment, and read up on the ultimate kitchen design do’s and don’ts. If you can think about light, colour, space and storage before making any decisions, you’ll be thinking like a pro.
Skylights can be an answer to both the storage and lighting problem. By throwing light downwards and outwards, the need for small windows is reduced, freeing up valuable vertical wall space which can then be used for high-rise cupboards. With a galley kitchen, consider installing French windows opening out on to your garden. If you lay a deck right outside the exit you can leave the windows open during the summer, increasing the feeling of space by making a garden room.
Thanks to new technologies, innovations and designers’ imagination – there are so many possibilities for kitchen design and arrangement that leading when we select one for our home, should be only our lifestyle, location and sense of taste. For people who live in the city, the possibilities are infinite: small and functional kitchens, jazzy urban compositions, fabric produced articles, innovative inventions that create surfaces resistible to damage and erosion and so on. For the ones that prefer more natural lifestyle and want to feel the connection with nature – the trends leading to more rustic design, the recycled materials selection and natural composition should be more suited. Just take your pick and enjoy.
